Writing for the Web is a course I took during my Masters in Professional Writing.
The course explored tools, rhetorical strategies, ethical questions, and examples for designing linguistic, video, and audio content across various online platforms. During which, we learned about accessibility standards for online content and practiced accessible design through captions, transcripts, image descriptions, and structured page content. We also explored current social media content creation practices and generated content for an academic audience. We learned basic web markup and design languages and investigated possibilities for creating interactive narratives.
A Phrog's Life is an interactive HTML and CSS project where users navigate a blog about a phogger, hiding more than what's on its surface.
It remixes media like images, audio, and video to create an interactive experience for the user. Whether a user clicks a photo or watches a video, there is always something more hidden behind the screen.
The project allowed for creativity while also challenging problem solving skills. For example, I had a difficult time with having audio autoplay, since most browsers block the feature. I had to find a way to allow for autoplay while avoiding the restrictions.
While working on this project, I had to think from an accessibility standpoint. While my page is not the most accessible, it still has accessible aspects. Images have alt text, but I know that A Phrog's Life needs work on its accessibility. For example, transcripts for audio and video descriptions.
Nevertheless, this project challenged my problem-solving skills and creative thinking.
One important aspect of web writing is making stories and voices accessible. For this project, I recorded an audio interview and had to transcribe it. Transcriptions allow for those who are deaf (and those who want it) to follow along with a recording or to read information if they are unable to hear it.
I decided to interview my mom on her experience with immigrating to Japan. I decided to do this so I could learn more about her and her life prior to America. It is my goal to share diverse stories.
This assignment was to create three original pieces of social media content that would engage a KSU English or MAPW social media audience. The post must include text, relevant handles/hashtags, and alt text or captions for images/videos.
I decided to focus on the MAPW Instagram page. As I examined the page, I noticed a lack of information on registration dates. So, I created a post to help remind graduate students to register for their courses.
When creating social media content, I focused on my audience and ways to engage them while using free non-copyrighted content.
I also explored how to create an Instagram short to encourage students to apply to the KSU MAPW program. I researched trends to see what would potentially engage my targeted audience.
This interactive narrative was created using Twine. The goal of this project was to create a story with 1,500 - 2,000 words.
My personal goal for this project was to create a game with multiple endings. I also wanted to add more horror elements, since I am interested in exploring the horror genre.
Throughout the creation of this piece, I found myself thinking of ways to make it interactive, by hiding choices or asking the player for their name.
I had to think of ways to use language to add elements of horror and uneasiness. This allowed me to take a different perspective from the genres I typically write.
